Chris Gibbs, owner of the acclaimed L.A.-based store Union, refers to his baby as “the best kept secret” in menswear. But for those in the know, Union is an institution, with roots that go back to late ’80s NYC and the very roots of streetwear. The L.A. location opened in 1991, with Gibbs arriving five years later. He would eventually take the reins from original founders Mary Ann Fusco and James Jebbia, overseeing its growth through an ever-shifting retail landscape. Now, Gibbs is set to expand, announcing the opening of a Tokyo location in April of this year.
Union Tokyo will launch in partnership with Jack Inc., the distribution firm known for its long-running relationship with Stussy Japan. The new door will feature over 30 brand and artist collaborations, with upcoming releases from the likes of KAWS, Alyx, Awake, OAMC, WTAPS and NEIGHBORHOOD. The collaborations will roll out throughout the year, while Union’s second private label collection will drop in conjunction with the Tokyo store opening.
